  The clone is placed exactly over the original object and is selected.

  Deleting without Shift adjusts handles on the remaining nodes to preserve the shape of the curve in some, but not all cases. When deleting sharp corners handles will not be adjusted.

  Deleting with Shift inverts the behavior: for slight curves adjacent nodes' handles will not be adjusted, for very cusp curves, handles will be adjusted to try and keep the shape.

  Note that there is a preferences option in the Node tool preferences that will disable autodetection and always adjust handles to try and keep the shape.
