When I import an external svg document with linking, I'm unable to snap to any of its nodes. I realize that for performance reasons (presumably) the imported content is rendered as a raster image, but is there a way for me to enable snapping on an imported linked svg? Is there a solid reason why I'm able to do this with symbols so easily and not imported linked svgs?
Symbols are embedded into the current document, rather than linked. They can be seen in the "Current Document" menu of the document after being inserted from a symbol library.
I see now that symbols are embedded, so their behavior makes sense. That aside, could there be something simple I'm doing wrong to prevent myself from being able to snap to linked imports? If not, why must a linked imported svg file be rendered as a raster image during editing?

I can only guess that Inkscape isn't capable (yet).
