I have imported a path from a PDF that consists of two dozen segments. Visually, the path is closed. In Inkscape I selected the whole path and executed "Path" -> "Union".Β The path is now a single object, but still not closed. With some nodes, when I select and move the node, it can be seen that the path is not closed at that node.
When I fill the path, the individual segments get filled instead:
Β
The nodes where the path is not closed also look different (smaller):
How can I change the path to an actual closed path?
Select every segment with Select tool - change to Node tool and draw a rectangle including every node and hit the icon in the toolbar where it says "Join selected nodes". Should now work as a shape.

I'd try selecting all nodes and use the Join Nodes button. If that fails, the doubled nodes may need to be joined manually.
Awesome, that worked.Β Thanks very much!
