Beginners' Questions Inkscape randomly grouping objects together

This is a bug I noticed ages ago but it's not too bad just a bit annoying so mostly just ignore it. Sometimes Inkscape randomly groups two or more objects together, usually one that I'm working on (have selected) but then also randomly other objects. These can be nearby or anywhere on the canvas, two objects or sometimes many more. At first I thought I'd maybe accidentally selected a bunch of them and grouped them together but then started to notice it doing it with an essentially random selection of objects which I know I didn't have selected! I'm not even using the group function most of the time, I usually notice when I move an object and find a load of others attached to it.

Not sure if this is a known bug and has anyone else noticed it?

I haven't heard many comments of that nature.

Perhaps look at the shortcut keys you are using.Β

G is the gradient tool, Ctrl + G is group.

Is it possible that you have a sticky Ctrl key ?

[edit : amusingly I seem to have a stick left mouse button ]

Thanks for the replies. I think it's just a rare bug. inkinea it often happens when I haven't even used the group command, I can for example just change the stroke / fill colour on an object and find it's suddenly grouped itself with other objects at random.

I use Inkscape since 2006 and this has not happened even once.

Were the objects grouped before and you Cut & Pasted one of them?

Or did you drag & drop another SVG file in?

If you have an object with both fill and stroke and you select Path β†’ Stroke to Path, it will turn into a group of separate fill and stroke objects.

This is true, and somewhat recent feature.Β πŸ‘

This happens to me constantly. I've only been using Inkscape about a year, but through a couple versions. It's not sticky keys or confusing shortcuts. No special action is needed for "auto grouping." Just have objects near each other. Grab one and you get the one near, too.

It is not aΒ  big deal, but as OP said, VERY annoying.

Otherwise, awesome software. I love the alpha stuff, and easy clip masks.Β  I used CorelDraw since 1989. I was so worried finding replacement software would be hard. Now I'm Linux and Inkscape and super happy.

Anyway, I think it is a bug. Pretty minor.
