Beginners' Questions Creating a Font

I have created the alphabet from A to Z.  But look as I might, I cannot find out how to use the SVG Font Editor.  I tried selecting "A" and hitting "Get curves from selection" and then "Create glyph" - but when I type "A" in the "Preview text" box, I get a black box.  When I add "A" to the "Matching string" box next to the created glyph (glyph 1), the preview boxes disappear completely, and after typing "A" in the "Preview text" box, nothing happens.  So...  What am I doing wrong?  I looked in the "Help" options, but saw nothing - under "Font," "Creating," SVG," "Edit," or anywhere else, skimming through the "Comprehensive Index."  Nor did I find a thread about this feature searching the topics here.  Other websites were of no help, either.  It would be nice to have instructions on how to use this feature.

Amaterasu Solar, I had that issue also - it can be resolved by using Path>Union for Inkscape to see it as a glyph.

Thank You, Dee.  The link provided by Tyler above helped Me greatly and I learned about using the "union" function.  I have already created the capital letters for My font and input them, seeing them in the preview, and am now working on the lower case letters.

This is great information. I never knew that feature was in Inkscape before. I spent $400 on a font making course using Illustrator and FontCreator, and I'm trying to fit the instructions to use Inkscape (and Font Creator). I'll have to take a look at this, my font is all set as paths in Inkscape.

off topic a bit- Designtypegeek, I initially started trying to use FontForge (FF), ugh, nightmare to draw it there.  The problem is that there isn't much documentation on using inkscape this way.  I ended up being able to make a font in Inkscape, then took it into FF to run the testing and work out the kinks, that worked well actually, and then you can save the imported font easily in the various formats, TT, OTF.  I uploaded each glyph individually, but 'I think' there's supposed to be a way to upload the whole file.  That would make it SO fast to create a font.  I only did one test font, and am really looking forward to getting back to making more fonts.  So sorry you spent $400 on a program!  The biggest hiccups were knowing you have to use combine or union vs grouping, that one really tripped me up, and then trying to find special characters and figure out which slot to use, things like that (I made the 4 card suit symbols in case I want to make decks of cards).  Cant say I'm even an intermediate in font making, but it sure is a fun challenge to learn!  I can foresee a very lonnnnngggg thread on font making!
