Freehand tool, also lets you set the shape to ellipse, if you have not enabled the little pressure sensitive input button.
Usually, the resulting line will be far too fat, so you want to tweak the value in the "Scale" box on the tool options line at the top (if you haven't hidden that).
Alternatively (and for both Bezier (B) and Freehand (P) tools), you can, after you draw the line, hit N to switch to the node tool, find the powerstroke handle, and tweak the thickness interactively.

Problem - Wings have a tappered ends. Can I do those with Bézier curves?
