My hobby is medieval illumination and I use Inkscape to create patterns and the basic layout. Electric rubbing out is far easier than pencil and paper and you can manipulate the design until you get the proportion right.
The medieval illuminators used exemplars and traced through using a sharp pointer and red bolle. For me Inkscape is the modern version and much more flexible. For a free program it's superb and I thank everyone involved in bringing it to the public.

I have attached two files one is the inkscape outline file and a photograph of the partially painted and gilded illumination.
The floral style is Italian late 14th century, the miniature is some thing i created myself.
