I seem to be only able to import optimised svg files into inkscape both the inkscape svg and plain svg do not import. Am I missing something as I understand that other users have no problems.
I have grouped all objects which I understand flattens the paths and erased all unwanted elements but cant understand what I am doing wrong
Grouping is just like collecting in a folder. If you want a single object from many shapes you must be sure to have only color filled shapes and no strokes for example which can be converted with Path->Stroke to Path and then make a compound path by either Path->Union or Path->Combine.
