I'm hearing rumblings about planning the About Screen Contest for version 1.0. I don't think there's a specific time frame yet. But it's probably a good time to start thinking of what kind of drawing you want to make.
Traditionally, the community holds a drawing contest for the image which will become the Help menu > About Inkscape window image. The winner is voted on by.... Hhmm, I forget who votes....someone else help me out? I think developers do the voting. Well, the rules will be explained when the contest is started and announced. But in any case, I imagine it's a great honor to have one's drawing win the contest and become part of Inkscape.
Anyone can participate. You don't have to be especially a great artist, if you enjoy the creative process, and like to join in community activities. I think everyone can agree I could only marginally be considered an artist, and personally I don't think I have any chance of winning. But I'm still going to put in my best effort.
I think it's just fun to participate, and I hope a lot of Inkscape users can get excited about it, and participate, just in the spirit of community.
So get your creative juices flowing. Just think -- the long awaited version 1.0 ! How can you not join the fun?!!
Pardon my ignorance, I have a few thousand reasons.
3000+ shared cliparts went down the gutter, 100000+ filters blown by the wind.
33000+ moderating action and total rejection. Already lost without entering I intend not to propagate mediocrity any further. May the best with high hopes win.
I'm sorry you feel so badly about....it sounds like a lot of things.
If you're referring to Open Clipart, for part of that - they have nothing to do with the About Screen contest. And the Inkscape community can't do anything about OCA's problems. (Although personally, I don't buy their excuse for apparently closing OCL, there's nothing the Inkscape community can do about it. Not that I know of, anyway.)
The About Screen contest will be held in Inkscape website's gallery.
(Yes, surely my entry will be mediocre! But I have no doubt the winner will be great artwork. And you have the skills to really compete!)
I'm not sure what has caused you to feel rejected. But I certainly don't feel that way about you. I think we all realize that InkscapeForum would have gone down the tubes long ago, except for your loyalty and dedication at a critical time.
And plus, your filters aren't lost. You still have them, I assume? Maybe you could host them on your website? If I weren't facing financial issues in the near future, you could put them on my server. Or maybe something could be worked out to put them in the Inkscape website gallery? (although I remember there's something about it you don't like) Or you could look into this for hosting them, maybe? I'm not sure if they would host images, but maybe? https://panel.tuxfamily.org/
@doctormo So we have decided now that it'll be five? Would be great to know that. I've asked about it in the issue, where you replied we'd decide upon the number spontaneously. Thanks for handing out consistent info :)
Lol. I only say five because that's what it was last time (fairly sure) so this is a "decision by nostalgia" 😅
I was unsure about laying out a number since I wanted to see first if someone was running the show. But maybe this decision needed some historical examplification.
No, there's nobody running the show 🤷 Only people stepping in half-heartedly, when nothing is moving and no info is flowing. Coordination and communication is lacking, esp. by the one who opened the issue. Just opening one without replying is like putting the trash bin in front of someone else, expecting them to do something about it. Not something I enjoy doing.
By putting this here, rather than Contest board, I didn't mean this to be the official announcement. So I didn't take the "five" as the official rules, but just a general idea.
By the wording of the original lssue, it sounded (to me) like the OP thought it was his job. If he originally volunteered for that job, maybe he should be seeing to all the details? Or at least, delegating?

Sounds like fun!
The whole community does the first round of voting, and then the top five are given to developers to vote on.
Some are excluded because they break the rules, but we try and make sure issues are fixed before the final vote.

Watch out for the announcement. The contest is going to start in a few days!
Actually, it has already started: https://inkscape.org/en/community/about-screen-contests/
Whoever is in charge of this (since I temporarily stopped) needs to post in the Competition board!
Done.
