Beyond the Basics How to create/edit a master page in 1.3

    Hi,

I've been an InkScape user since about 0.91.

I just started playing with multi-page options, didn't know about it and thinking it will be useful.  However, there is information around about creating a Master Page that says select "Extensions, Pages..".

My Inkscape has no such submenu and I don't see the option to add one by adding extensions.

Has something changed here?  How do I get to the Master page?

Are you sure about this is in Inkscape?

I can´t find any entry in the Help:

    Except: Extension->Page->Make Page Tileable:

Or an entry at Extensions->JessyInk->Master slide…

Notes around the release of 1.2 (the first release to support multipages) mentions the Master Page feature.
    e.g. https://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape-pages/files/

"Master page The master page is used to display elements in all pages. To edit it, just navigate to it (Extensions -> Pages -> Go to -> Master page). Everything you insert here, will be visible on all pages. If you want to insert page numbers, create a new text area using the text tool in which you have to type the text "#page#". Of course you could also type anything next to the page text. Only the page text will be transformed according to each page, while everything else will be untouched. "

That sourceforge link is an old, old, old extension. I saw 2011 mentioned somewhere. The 1.2 revision applied to the extension, not to Inkscape, which was at revision 0.48 back then. The changes to Inkscape at 1.0 made many extension obsolete, and this is one of those. The developer hasn't updated it since then.

Here's a trick I worked out for a master page in Inkscape 1.3.
It's a bit clunky, but better than copy/pasting to every page, and is editable too.

    - Use a layer, called "master" or "all pages" to set up your master page stuff.
(You can call it what you like so long as it's sensible =o) )
    - Add all your pages if you haven't already. Keep to default spacing.
    - On page 1, draw a rectangle from the left hand corner of the page to the left hand corner of page 2. Use snap. Place it off the page, but snapped to the page corner.
    - Group it with all the other master page stuff.
    - With the group selected, go Edit >Clone >Create Tiled Clones.
    - Set columns to the number of pages, rows to 1.
(Assuming the pages are arranged horizontally.)
    - Click "Create".
    - Select the clone on page 1 and delete it, leaving the original.
    - Lock the master layer.

If you need to edit the master,
    - first unlock the layer.
    - double-click the original on page 1 to enter the group and make the changes. You can alter, delete or even add elements and they should be reflected in the clones.
    - lock the layer again.

If you need to add a page, add it and then select the previous clone group and go Edit >Create Clone, then move the clone onto the new page, snapping the off-page rectangle to the page corner to align it.

To change the page order, use the page controls -
     - select the page to move.
     - switch "Move Objects with Page" on.
     - Make sure the master layer is locked !!
     - Use "Move Before Previous" / "Move After Next" to position the page.

And of course if you don't want the master on some pages, just delete the clone on that page. Don't delete the original on page one though. Move it to page 2.

Line numbers - sorry, got no clever fix for that. =o(
