Beginners' Questions Trying to Break Apart Path, turns into a black blob?

    I have one single path (the words "sun's out buns out")-when I break apart the path, I should get individual letters. Instead, when I break apart the path, I get a massive black blob shape. What should I do to fix this? I've attached screenshots.

    The status bar is useful to find the type of objects and effects on them.

    Convert to path. It will solve most of your problems in life.
