What was until today a routine procedure for my work has suddenly changed.
Previously whenever I copied or cut a drawn path ( e.g A simple 1mm wide line with curves and nodes etc., in this case) then pasted it somewhere else on the same layer, the outcome was a simple copy and I went on with my work with the new line etc.
Now when I cut or copy a path the result on pasting is a slightly blurry non-transparent picture that is no longer an editable path.
I must have changed a setting somewhere that I don't fully understand, can anyone help me get back to getting a normal 'paste' of my copied work?
Thank you both Inklinea and Tyler for your quick replies and help. Disabling the X11 seemed to make the right changes that now enable the correct copy and paste function.
I really appreciate the help I get in this forum, thank you again

Are you able to make a blank image. Then carry out the problematic procedure and upload the svg here ?
Thank you for the quick response.
Yes I've made two random shapes and pasted them on the right hand-side. I'll try uploading now
File to look at.
The only difference from yesterday's work flow is that I had previously done the requested XQuartz update.
I hope you can see what's happening

That is very odd. The pasted image is a real bitmap. It's in the svg as base64 encoded png.
I would try to reset inkscape preferences.
Edit>Preferences>System>then click the reset preferences button

OK good to know,
However, mmm, I'm unable to find any reset preferences button. I haven't upgraded to the latest version yet.
I have Edit>Preferences>System... can only see a selection box for Latency Skew and next checkbox for 'Pre-render Named icons'.
Should I look elsewhere perhaps?
If quartz was updated, it may have reset the clipboard. Please review this portion of the Mac OS FAQ:
