Using Inkscape with Cutters/Plotters Cutters like; laser-cutters?

Inkscape is a recommended tool at my local hacker-space for prepping cut paths to be sent to the obnoxiously finnicky  Lasercut 5.3 – Control Software.

There are problems with scaling reported at a few websites.

It seems that importing Inkscape DXF to LibreCAD allows users greater control of cutting path.

Has anyone collated current definitive guides on producing  correctly scaled DXF exports, plug-in et all?

    Welcome to the forum!

This is the only potential issue that I know about, where paths made with Inkscape are not the correct size when sent to the cutter.

    https://inkscape.org/learn/faq/#inkscape-092-my-drawings-are-just-quarter-their-original-size-when-i-open-them-program-xyz

Otherwise, we would need specifics.  We would need to see the individual SVG file where the problem is occuring (or DXF or whatever) as well as Inkscape version and operating system involved.

Maybe someone else knows about some global issue?  But I haven't heard of any.

We've also been refactoring extensions that produce DXF output and are looking out for maintainers for the code (i.e. people who have cutters to test it with and can become domain experts) so also keep your eyes open if you get help from outside these forums and invite them to come join us.

    I am having similar problems:

.dxf files imported into Inkscape are microscopic and not at all to scale.

.svg drawings imported into Sheetcam from Inkscape are about 300% of the original drawing scale in Inkscape .

Right now, I cannot get Sheetcam to open either a .dxf or .svg from Inkscape. The files appear to load but don’t visualize.

i was previously using Adobe Illustrator and exporting files as . dxf which seemed to load without issue. I think there are some incompatibilities between Sheetcam and Inkscape but I don’t know on which side the problem resides.

i am running Inkscape on a Mac, and Sheetcam ( which has Windows and Linux versions) via Parallels at home but using a Linux in shop to run Sheetcam and the Mach machining program there.

    Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

    Welcome to the forum!

As I mentioned in my reply above, we need to look at each individual file.  If you have a test file, or you could make a simple file for testing, please share it (or them) with us.  Follow the steps in this faq item, and test to see if that solved the problem for that file. https://inkscape.org/learn/faq/#inkscape-092-my-drawings-are-just-quarter-their-original-size-when-i-open-them-program-xyz     (Even though that faq implies that the problem would create a too-small file, I have seen cases where a wrongly set Scale was making the images too large.  It won't hurt to perform those steps, even if you don't need to, and it's the first step for troubleshooting.)

One thing I've experienced in opening DXF files, is that they open as a huge image.  For the longest time, I thought there might be a bug, or something wrong with my system because whenever I tried to open a DXF file, it would appear to be an empty file.  However I later discovered that the image was simply so large and I was just looking at an open space in a huge image!  They're line drawings, after all.

There are some options when you open the DXF file, where you can choose among 3 or 4 scale options.  So you might try using different options.  Or you might consider simply scaling the image with Inkscape, once you have it open.

There may be other solutions as well, but those are all I can think of.  And as I mentioned, we'd be glad to look at a test file, if it might help.

I'm not sure if a bug report regarding incompatibility with Sheetcam would be appropriate.  But if some cause can be pinned down, or at least suggested, it would probably be worth the trouble to make the report.  But first we'd need the right people with the necessary hard and software, and technical skills, to investigate.  (Unfortunately, I don't have any of that wares or skills.)

Thanks for your response. I will go through the processes suggested and see what develops.

I've posted a link to this forum thread on the hacker-space discourse board to get things rolling.
I'm new to the group and yet to find my feet with the laser-cutting process, but I'm willing to run any test files you need in order to record, photograph and post results once I know what I am doing.

I recognise Martin from DeviantArt Inkscape group ::waves::. I should have known I'd find you here :)

It is my understanding that the laser-cut software requires a hardware dongle to operate the cutter. It can be run in demo mode without the dongle, but does not allow any form of output other than display.  That would still be useful to check your work before taking a trip to the workshop but I'm runing a low spec Ubuntu Linux rig and faffing with wine to getting the laser-cut software to work feels like hard work.  The point is that I would  have to hog the actual machine to run tests.

👋 Hi @symbolicM good to see you here.

One day you can reverse engineer the windows software and make a linux driver 😅

I have no issues using Inkscape DXF output and Sheetcam. Also keep in mind that Sheetcam supports SVG.

(This may date back to the senseless release of mm and scale=1 as the default document.   I have set my default.svg scale to [1px:1]; same as [1in:96], [1mm:3.77953].)

I also use DXF & Inkscape I/O from Fusion 360, Alibre, LibreCad without issue.   I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06).

Sirmones-miller, please share examples of an Inkcape SVG and the resulting DXF that have the problem.
