I'm happy to have found this forum. While I have managed to create SVG's(my main purpose for using Inkscape) using jpeg and png files, I've only been able to do it using multiple programs because I don't know enough about how to actually do things on this program...such as cropping out unwanted portions of a jpeg file, right now I am opening it in my picture viewer to crop it out when I know there must be a way to do it in Inkscape.  I know there is so much more to learn. Does anyone know of good videos instruction either on YouTube or purchased that would help me learn some of the vast array of things to learn about creating SVG's from jpeg and png files on this program? I attended one Webinar that was supposed to be by someone highly knowledgeable but she was a horrible teacher that didn't even seem to know what she was doing and I quit halfway through, it was obvious I wasn't going to learn anything from her. Thanks for any help in direction.

Logo's by Nick has a Inkscape YouTube instructional channel.  It's a good place to start.

As to cropping.  In vector you can't crop.  Vector images don't have pixels, they have paths. Cropping is done to pixels.  Admittedly, most vector programs are a mix of raster and vector abilities.  Some even have a true ability to crop a bitmap, but crop is a raster thing, not vector.  Inkscape won't crop bitmaps.  What you can do is set a clip.  Visually, this is the same as a crop.  Technically it is not.

Think of clipping as a non-destructive crop... one that can be modified in-situ.

Much of Nick's tutorial series is intermediate to advanced. I suggest starting with the tutorials in Inkscape's help menu, and then asking questions here in the fora.

Thanks phiscribe and Tyler, I will definitely try both of these things. This will give me a starting point where I will at least know what questions to ask. I have been cropping png's and jpeg's in my photo program before adding to Inkscape and converting but had hoped I could crop in Inkscape before converting to SVG, apparently not but I will definitely have to try the clipping... that may even prove to be better since a lot of my cropping tends to be in corners where part of the image may get cut off. Thanks again for sure.
