You should ensure the document size is the same as the page you want to print on.
Go to File => Document properties.
Change the page size.
Then resize the entire picture so it is inside of the page in Inkscape.
You can do this by selecting everything & using the resize handles <==> on the edge of your selection. Hold down Ctrl to keep everything in perspective.
@TylerDurden Thanks for the link to the Official Manual.
I quite like the selection of manuals found on the Inkscape home page of which the official manual was my first read. I suspect there is need for a few varieties of manuals that deal with people coming from different backgrounds. A graphic designer coming from an Adobe Illustrator background would have questions related to how to do something they know how to do.
But someone who has never illustrated is still trying to figure out what on earth they are doing. As such they are often trying to glean the context which is sometimes omitted in official texts. Which I suspect is the reason for a lot of the beginner questions in the first place.
Would you prefer I only link to the Official Manual. Or all of them every time I answer a question? The manual I linked to is also listed on the Inkscape help menu. From my perspective I consider them supplementary to each-other rather than in competition. But maybe I'm missing a nuance in the community.
I most often try to link to a page in one of the manuals that is the most relevant to a question someone is asking.
I would refer to the free.fr document as the official manual (albeit incomplete). The readthedocs.io document is also by Inkscape developers and a useful resource.
how to resize a imported pic to scale to user defined print ?

Have a look at this page in the Manual - using the selector tool...
The official Manual.
