    I'm a beginner and I am using a Mac when I try to use text nothing comes up same thing for when Im trying to use shapes and Im not entirely show where view and outline is

    Can you go Inkscape->Preferences->System=Reset Preferences and restart Inkscape?

    I was also experiencing the issue with text being invisible.  Can confirm that resetting the preferences fixed the issue for me.
