Beginners' Questions How to set fill and line for Eraser?

    Hello --

I would like to use the Eraser as an eraser -- that is, delete lines and shapes leaving no line or color (clear, for a png with background transparency). How can I set this as a preference for this tool?

The option is right here on the Preference page (see attached).

(I have to laugh at this Inkscape support page, which starts "For reasons which may not be entirely obvious". Yeah, you bet they're not obvious....)

It seems to me this widget should set the foreground and background for Eraser.

    It´s a vector eraser - don´t work on bitmaps.

Actually, the Eraser does work on bitmaps. I did it on a few trial images, but I had the wrong colors set.

I have no idea what you´re talking about:

Indeed, the Eraser works on bitmap in two modes: totally erase and "clip from object" (that is, indeed like clipping with the proper tool in the Object Menu). Doesn't work as cutter, because this is basically a boolean operation that cannot be performed on bitmaps.
To set one of these function, open the Eraser Tool (not Preferences) and choose a Mode clicking on the proper icon (see Polygon's gif).

@zerocinquanta  Can you show us how this works on bitmaps please? From my experience it´s just Clipping and nothing will be erased from a bitmap like in an raster graphics editor like GIMP.

It took a while, but now I understand.  To erase a bitmap, use the clipping mode.

The eraser colour setting has no effect on the erased objects.  It's only a visual aid providing contrast from the background image so you can see the eraser stroke as you work.

As I said; just clipping (or deleting):

Thanks. So if I export that image as png, that X you made over the pig will be transparent?

I presume we are saying the same:

    AFAIK, yes.

    👍

@zerocinquanta you are my hero. I find the interface of this app to be quite the mystery. Thanks so much.
