Beginners' Questions "Bordure embattled".

I'm a heraldry amateur, and I want to create nice devises.
One of the things that I stumble upon, know, is what we call "a bordure embattled".

This is "a bordure embattled gules". An embattled shield edge in red, so to speak.

Now... I don't just want to steal an existing bordure, not even from the commons for several reasons:
    1. I haven't found one single bordure that really fits the shields that I use. Those would be this shape:

     http://clipart-library.com/clipart/pi5An7Mi9.htm

    2. If someone specifies the amount of battlements they want on their crest, I cannot use prefabricated ones.

    3. I want to learn how to use Inkscape properly.

As you can see in the example, the border is (or rather: it SHOULD be) exactly parallel to the edge of the shield. Furthermore each embattlement has to be equally wide and long in the middle, and the width and height should be equal too.
So... the question is: how would I generate that?

Maybe like this: (I skipped the math to make the gaps the same as the blocks.)

Wow, that looks great! I'll give it a shot!

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it! :)

Hmmm... I have no idea what I do different. :(
But this is what I get. :(

Please share an example svg file and describe OS vers. and Inkscape vers.

Here, this is what I did. I tried to do exactly what you did too.
Except for the fact that I already have the perfect shape and dimensions of the shield. Drawing it from scratch is kind of pointless and won't give great results.

Anyway. I don't know what I did wrong, but the result is terrible. :(

    OS: Win10.
    Inkscape:  1.0.1 (3bc2e813f5, 2020-09-07)

Here is the shield I'm working with, as well as the presumably correct size of block. (Presumably as in: "1/9 of the width of the shield. That should fit greatly, I think")

Both objects must be paths, not in groups. Give that a try. :)

Thanks for all the help and the patience! But it still doesn't work, unfortunately...

This is what happens when I turn off "Follow Path Orientation", though. All of the sudden, the battlements are at least on the correct spot. Unfortunately, they aren't rotated to follow the path orientation.
I really created an all new file now. There aren't any groups, both objects are turned into paths. The shield is the lowest layer, just like you showed.

    I can't see what I'm doing differently. :(

I now rotated the embattlements manually, but that isn't accurate at all, obviously. I'd love to hear about a better solution. :)

Ah... the extension seems to be broken in v 1.xx.xx. 😒

    Gah... great... :(
Thanks for your patience and helpfulness any way! I sincerely appreciate it!

You'll hear from me soon again with the next stoopit questions, I bet. ;P
