I'm knew to Inkscape but this seems to be a glitch as it doesn't always happen, and often at random times.
I mainly use the Text Tool for my Axidraw pen plotter which I convert to Hersey Text. I want to keep my Text Layer as I want to come back to it to adjust if I don't like and then convert again.
I always Preserve Original Text when converting to Hersey Text. But sometimes right after using the plotter the actual text in the Text Layer disappears. The layer is still there but no text. This also happens sometimes when I save and come back to the file later. The Text Layer is under my Objects panel but the text in it is gone.
Let me know if you have any suggestions. I often have very complicated settings for font, size, line spacing and kerning. All these disappear even though I did not delete them.
I am using the latest version of Inkscape 1.1.2, macOS Monterey 12.0.1 Apple Silicon.
Is the this extension also part of AxiDraw or is it Inkscape? 'Extension - Text - Hersey Text'
Because I also have the same problem using that one. I just made some text, converted it to Hersey Text, Preserved the Original, saved the file, closed it, opened back up, and my text was still deleted but the Text Layer remains.
@lesouthy I'm the developer of both Hershey Text as well as the AxiDraw extensions. Hershey Text is included with Inkscape. I see that you wrote to us directly, so I'll follow up there to ask for more information.

On digging, the issue appears not to be with Hershey Text nor AxiDraw, but an Inkscape bug: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/6588
