I have bitmap images of landscapes. They contain WAY more than I need.
I want to trace over the objects/shapes I only need.
Think of it as laying a sheet of tracing paper over an original, and with a pen or pencil tracing over selected parts needed and pulling the tracing paper off the original image resulting in a sheet of tracing paper with only the image you can now work with.
Can this be done with inkscape? If so, what would be the exact steps needed to accomplish this?
You can trace anything from a bitmap as you like - if youΒ΄re talking about cropping the image to a certain spot of interest you can do by drawing your outline above the image - add select with image and go Object->Clip->Set Clip. This is a non-destructive procedure unless you go Edit->Make a Bitmap Copy.
