Beginners' Questions Locked Linked Offset
  1. #1
    Nikkidee Nikkidee @Nikkidee

I am trying to make a linked offset on text and the option has a lock on it in the menu.  I have followed all the proper procedure to covert the text to a path by ungrouping, then union/grouping.  I have even tried to do an offset on a shape to test the linked offset function.  The lock never disappears from the option and the offset never works.  Please help!!!

Please go Inkscape`s Preferences and hit "Reset Preferences" and restart Inkscape and check again.

Is it possible to do it without resetting preferences?

I did the resetting, but the problem still stays the same. My linked offset is locked and I don't know how to fix it.

Could be "Snapping" options are in the way. Disable snapping for a moment and try again. If this still not help, we need an example file to check.

Did anyone find a solution to this? Mine is locked and I followed the above, reset settings and made sure the snapping was off.

Has anyone found a solution to this? The last comment on this thread was a year ago, so I am hoping someone can help. Snapping is off, and apparently resetting didn't help, so I am stuck. Thanks!

It's not locked. Forget the lock symbol on the icon in the menu.
Just pick a different color in order to better see what happens when you drag the diamond shaped node.

I can't reproduce the problem. Does this happen occasionally? Or is it every linked offset? Perhaps you can upload an afflicted svg file for us to examine.

Thanks - I think the lock on the icon was confusing me. When I couldn't get offset to work properly, I thought it was because something was locked out. I now realize the lock is part of the icon (indicating that the offset is tied to the object - makes sense now). It turns out that the problem was the font I had selected - it was too complex. When I tried it with a simpler font, it worked somewhat. I found a couple of different sets of instructions, and neither seems to be completely accurate with the current version, but I think I have it working fairly well. Thanks @Paddy_CAD and @Aero for your help.

As aero mentioned, the icon of linked offset has a locker.

Linked offset only works on paths (not groups).

It generates a new path (with the same icon , see in object's panel) and you must use node tool to move the only handle (diamond shaped) to set the offset.
