Inspired by this blog post, I've been using Inkscape (instead of PowerPoint etc.) to make slides for conference presentations for more than a year. Unfortunately the third party extensions facilitating this usage (e.g. JessyInk) seem to be poorly maintained, so I just write my own scripts to convert a bunch of svg files to pdf files, and use the command line utility "pdfunite" to combine the separate pdf files into one pdf file for the presentation. I used to edit all the slides as multiple layers in a single .svg files (there are various ways to extract the layers as individual svg files afterwards), but lately I switched to editing the .svg files separately to keep RAM usage small.

I use this extension to insert bullet points. Only unicode characters can be used as bullet points in this approach. Still it's better than nothing.

My slides contain lots of LaTeX math formulas. I found the TexText extension to be quite powerful and flexible, compared with e.g. available LaTeX plugins for Powerpoint. Inline LaTeX (MathJax is not good enough for me) is basically a missing feature in every presentation software, unless you use a LaTeX presentation framework like Beamer. When I absolutely need inline LaTeX, I use the TexText extension to typeset both the math formulas and the surrounding text. This works because xelatex / lualatex can use the same system fonts used by Inkscape.

Does anyone else make presentations with Inkscape? What are your tips for improving the workflow? Or do you think Inkscape is an overkill for routine presentations?

Have you considered Libre Office Impress along with imported svg files as an alternative.

The Libre Office suite after all include the formula editor that can be used from within other programs (Draw, Calc, Writer, . . ).

JessyInk is a series of Javascript applet to create presentations in Inkscape (slides, animation, etc) or usable in a browser. Jessyink dates back to 2013, I'm not an user of it, idk if it's still updated.
