I use Inkscape for professional use. I use it in collaboration with Gimp, Scribus and Blender. These four programs is all I need for the work graphic work I do. (Board game design).
An extremely important feature when working with complex sets of graphics is the linking feature. I have previously worked with Adobe and they also have links by their CreativeCloud. I never liked how that was implemented although it got better once I learned that it was possible to create different libraries for each project. But it was complicated and very frustrating from time to time.
In Inkscape I just create a local library folder and put files in the folder. Much easier to handle and get control of.
But Inkscape has a flaw. A very, very, very, (add any number of "very" of your choice) critical flaw. If I use a linked image Inkscape can decide to use another file, anywhere on the disk, with the same name. The link doesn't even have to be broken, Inkscape can suddenly decide to switch to another file even if the image is still in my library. This unexpected behavior might be because I run this on a Google Drive and it maybe takes time to read the file. But it doesn't matter. Even if the link is broken Inkscape just can't (MUST NOT) look around to whatever file it might find with the same name.
This behavior forces med to be extremely careful in my work and name every file with some index to define the purpose of the specific file. Recently I found that I had material textures to Blender (that has a fantastic linking feature) there I had forgot this and suddenly Inkscape could start picking materials from my Blender file. Not the same image, not the same resolution so please stay out from there!
I want to ask if this feature might be implemented any time soon? Anyway, I want to strongly put in my vote for putting effort in improving this feature since I find it so utterly important.
I am impressed by the developer's and I appreciate the work they make. I understand that focus might be on CMYK and other likewise important things but in my professional use of Inkscape I have found that the link feature is what I miss most of everything right now. I have a workflow between my programs and everything else is solved. Lossy compression to JPEG I do in Gimp (because Inkscape does no support subsampling 4:4:4), CMYK is fixed by Scribus and I can create pdf in print format (pdf/x1-a) also in Scribus. My set of tools are great. If just that linking problem could be fixed. Pleeease.
I suggest adding your comments to the open feature request, for starters.
hen I would contact the original feature requester (chameleon scales) or (chameleon scales) to to try to move the request forward. Maybe see if the feature could be sponsored ($$).

There is an old feature request for this. https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/5894
