Using Inkscape with Cutters/Plotters combined shapes laser cutting

I have a design with several inter-linked shapes - I am trying to cut the individual shapes - in wood - separately by laser, and combine them again later. I find that I want to have some "gaps" or "tolerances" between the shapes because if the cutting is not perfect, or the wood warps even a little bit, they will combine perfectly. If I use the "-" boolean operator to separate them I get no "tolerance" between them. Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks in advance - hope someone ther can relate to this question which may be too unclear or rare.

This is not an Inkscape answer ...

Some laser cutters have machine control software that can offset the cut to either side of the line which can be used to make the gap your looking for.
