Beyond the Basics REQ: Scaling on the fly

I've used Inkscape for years (since 0.48 on Linux and later on Windows) but fell for Xara. Xara Designer is a very useful vector drawing program capable of amazing things. But it's development has stalled and Inkscape is on the brink of overtaking Xara in functionality and stability.

What I miss most in Inkscape are two options. Scaliing and infromation of an object.

I'm a Landscape Architect and I make a lot of plans on a scale of 1:1000, 1:500 and 1:200. I can easily set a scale for a page in Xara. It will transfer any measure in cm's on the page to meters according to the scale. Xara gives the measurements of the object including the calculated area in the object bar. I know this info is also available in Inkscap but it takes some effort (and extensions) to have it somehow partially in Inkscpae. But it could so much easier.

IMHO it shouldn't be hard to add some lines to Inkscape to have this functionality .
