Just wondering if it is possible at all to squash single letters within a text box, without affecting the others? It's a very specific case, so not surprising I couldn't find any such question when googling. The desired effect is shown on top – the text has first been converted to paths, then the R has been squashed, manually, but the numbers remain at their usual width, and they have all been centre-aligned within the box by hand. The bottom shows how the text looks in the text box prior to converting to paths. I'd like to be able to quickly change the numbers without having to manually squash the R and align the text to centre. Is it at all possible to do this while the text is still editable?
Indeed I thought it was only possible by separating into two elements. What I've opted for instead is to modify the font externally. But thanks nevertheless.
Here's my attempt. The red text below is not actually text, but two patterns on paths. The red "R" is linked to the black "R" with [Pattern copies: Single, stretched] and will be scaled to occupy the same width as you change the parent text. The red "408" is linked to the black "408" with [Pattern copies: Single] so will not be scaled as you change the parent.

I have no perfect solution
I'd work with two text objects instead of one : one for the "R" and the other one for "408" and simply shrink the R with selector tool.
When shrinking, select the R by clicking one time and depending on your needs
