I would hope I'm not alone in noticing that, in order to get access to attributes of objects from the art board in a floating window and not a mandatory part of the current view/edit window. Maybe a pop-out menu-list. Or, a right-click pop-up-menu.

Also on Mac some floating windows wont close.

Inkscape's interface allows docking and/or floating dialogs. Settings are in the preferences:
