Beginners' Questions Trouble with Union

Hi! New here and hoping I give enough information for my question. I am working on files for laser engraving but having trouble with the Union function. I begin by creating the font and layout I'd like, next select the text and go to 'Object to Path.' At that point, I may move things a hair here and there but overall didn't change too much. I then select all (ungroup everything) and then choose 'Combine' and next 'Union.' At that point most of the items become a union but some do not. See the 'g' and 'M' below for an example. I cannot for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong here. I'm working off of a Windows desktop and have version 1.0.2 (e86c870879, 2021-01-15, custom). Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure why this won't work in first place; Inkscape is pretty reliable in Boolean operation - sometimes the path have different directions and Inkscape tries to maintain/introduce holes. I'd draw rectangular shapes (fill/no stroke) with snapping over the holes - select with text and go Path->Union.

I left one for you to try at "er":

Thanks for the quick feedback. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work and I absolutely cannot understand why it is combining some of the spaces via Path>Union and not others. If anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. This really has me halted on several projects so I'd love to get to the bottom of it. Thanks so much! 😞

You're saying selecting Text and the little yellow shape then Path->Union don't work? That's very strange, because it works here as for the other 3 holes I fixed that way.

Can you provide an example  where "tough as a" and "mother" are just being converted with  "Object to Path" - nothing more? The reason it's not working in one go is pretty sure the font you're using and converting text objects into paths will end in a group in first place; you have to get rid of before you can union the letters.

    Hi,
Perhaps it has to do with the little black heartshaped button in the fill& line menu, at the top-right:
fill is solid. If a path intersects itself, it can be set to make a hole or not (solid).

You should be able to unify all the letters into one path.
There is no need to combine them first, you can skip that step.

Yes - "combine" is counter productive in this workflow and not necessary. Wonder why she isn't able to "union" the 2 elements in the uploaded example though.
