Beginners' Questions Rotate and move letters

Trying to follow this tutorial: https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-adjust-text-in-inkscape-1701888

But the tools to change kerning or rotate characters are grayed out. What should I change to be able to use them?

Alternatively, is there a plugin or tool that would allow me to shake the characters a bit?

You have to have the letters selected using the text tool, just like they would look selected in a word processor.

The shortcuts keys for the kerning / rotation if you want to do it dynamically rather than clicking are here https://inkscape.org/doc/keys.html#idm3539

Depends if you want to keep it all as text. If you convert Path>Object to Path, then ungroup Object>Ungroup you can move the individual letters anyway you want. It just won't be editable or searchable as text anymore.

You haven't seen my screenshot. I'm reattaching it to this post (text was selected)

I was thinking like automatically move and rotate letters a bit, one by one, rather than having to do that by hand.

Not sure if I've correctly understood. Maybe... using the text cursor next to the letter, use the proper command(s) on the text tool command bar (see attachment)

It would probably get better results to do this manually. However the lack of on-canvas control makes it unnecessarily slow work. That, and the unclear Icons in dark mode.

Much needed on-canvas controls could let you use familiar controls to set the size, angle and H and V kerning quickly.

Dark Mode Icons don't help the user know what each value does.

Unfortunately you can't adjust kerning or rotation on flowed text (i.e. when you dragged a box with the text tool active, or moved the diamond handle at the bottom right of your text). If you want that degree of control you have to use non-flowed text, which you create by just clicking (not dragging) on the canvas with the text tool, to place the caret. The downside is that your text won't flow - so any line breaks will have to be inserted manually.

This. Thanks! I didn't expect that. It's so surprising that it may be interesting to mention it when people hover over the three tools?

    I know me and it wouldn't 😁

Plus, it's really tedious (moving and rotating all letters one by one at different angles)

It's likely that an automatic random jiggle would not look as good as you'd hope. And you'd still need to adjust many of the letters.

If moving each letter was made quick and easy, this could be all done in about 30 seconds.

There are some good ideas here. Thank you.

    Tweak-tool maybe?

Yes! That's the closest to what I wanted to do, thanks!
