HOWEVER this makes the object "insensitive to the mouse"!!! Which means that later on, I can't select the object to unlock it!!!
Other apps allow you to select a locked object (if only to unlock it)!!!
In this case, I immediately undid the lock (Cmd-Z) but how could I have unlocked it if I had closed, then re-opened the document???
EDIT 14h51: I could "Select All", then pick the menu item "Unlock All". Which works. It would be a pain, though, if I only wanted to unlock one of several locked objects.

Hay, you can it via Object Properties. Go to Object - Object Properties and you can Lock/Unlock and Hide Objects.

If you right click - 'Unlock All Objects Below'
