images i import, be it png or jpeg are not visible

Check that your view settings in Inkscape are turned on to show normal objects and not just outlines? Look at the menu bar and choose View > Normal ... it is probably not set to that? If so, try this to fix it.  =)

I also had this problem and solved it.
The problem is in Display Options (it looks like a monitor in the upper right corner of where you put photos) -> Uncheck Outline...
