Sometimes I need to start with regular shapes to get the points I want. But connecting them into new shapes is tedious. Is there a way not delete line segments but retain the points? For example, id like to have an dodecagon, retain the points, geometrically add points in between selected point at connect the final points into a new shape. Can I do this with inkskape?
Nodes can be added along a segment and segments can be removed between nodes. Paths (nodes and segments) can be added to a path forming a compound path ( non-contiguous sub-paths).

There is an extension which does this called 'pathpoints2dots'
It was written by Christian Hoffmann, updated for Inkscape 1.1 by Mario Voigt
You draw a small path - a circle, rectangle ( must be converted to path Path>Object to Path )
Click on that small path first, then shift click the path of interest.
It will then place clones ( which can be unlinked ) at each node.
