I've used Inkscape on and off over the years but have never had this problem. I'm using version .92 now. I can create a Bezier curve using either the Freehand or Bezier tool. I can move the actual Nodes on the curves no problem. If I hover mouse over handle it turns red as expected. BUT if I then left click and drag the mouse NOTHING HAPPENS. The mouse cursor moves but handle stays put. The ONLY way I can get the handle to move is if I SHIFT click and drag, but this only allows me to move handle further from or closer to the Node. It does not allow "free" movement in any other direction.
What the heck is happening?? This is driving me crazy.!!!
Thanks, Tyler, but not sure where I should check. I mean, I'm not aware of any tool that will ALLOW you to do this as an option.
I just discovered there is a version 1 now. Deleted old version, installed new one. Immediately had the exact same problem. I'll take a screenshot now and upload that.
Well, it was created with the Bezier tool and the "Draw freehand lines" tool exhibited same behaviour....
BUT I have RESOLVED the issue! -- Watching a YouTube video I drilled down to the file default.svg in my directory and double clicked to open in Inkscape. Tried the above examples and now works perfectly. Closed the programme and re-started using the usual icon and a "New document 1" opened up as usual. NOW it all works as it should. I have absolutely NO IDEA what was going on before.
Both the bezier pen tool and the pencil tool have options to draw splines that are not bezier curves such a b-spline. Yeah maybe putting it under the bezier pen tool is confusing but it had to go someplace. If you change the setting to one of those, it remembers it until you change it back. B-splines have different characteristics than bezier curves, so you are not seeing the same handles.
Cheers, I suspect you're right. Did get it resolved but that was basically because I got everything back to default. Wish I knew what it was I'd done that caused that...
With the Freehand or Bezier tools selected, check the buttons in the toolbar at the top of the canvas. Specifically, hover over the 'Mode' buttons and you'll find the third one causes them to create B-splines.
You are absolutely correct, Xav. Just verified. Nice to know what I was doing wrong. I had no idea what the difference was between a Bezier and a B-Spline. Cheers.

I'd check the tool controls at the top of the workspace.
If you can share a screenshot, that could be helpful.

Okay, screenshot attached.
That's a B-spline path, not a Bezier path... I'd try Path>Convert to path.
To create Bezier paths, use the first button in the pen tool controls.

Thanks for responding anyway, Tyler.
