Beyond the Basics Use bitmap image to create an arch with scatter

I am attemptig to make a scale model arch using a brick texture.

The arch required for the ho scale model in question is 1 cm wide and 1.2 mm high.

I have a copy of a step by step procedure that is supposed to do exactly what I want. But when I do what I think it says to do, it does not work for me.

I do not know where the procedure came from and there is no information I that I can use to find the author.

    It reads as follows:

#paragraph 1 "This is a bitmap that has been clipped, which automatically groups it, making the next grouping unnecessary, BUT I grouped it anyway, because it lets me scale the whole thing later...

The clip path is exactly the same shape as the bitmap.  The whole group is then put one a path using the scatter extension.

#paragraph 2 After the bitmap is in place, the orginal clipping path is edited with the node tool to suit the arch.  Note that this "crops" the image.

#paragraph 3Now I can open the origianl group and select the group inside and scale it, switching between the selector tool for scaling (actually, I used the KB shortcuts Alt< and > for precision) and the Node tool for adjusting the clipping path so that, as the group got bigger the edges could be matched up.

#paragraph 4 Of course when scaling you don't have to scale uniformly.! Here ou can see the result of scaling it down in height and up in with to get quite a different archithtural effect.  The extra groping step is what gives ou this flexibility. "

    My difficulty.

I am using inkscape 1.2.1 on windows on a laptop.

I import a brick texture from textures.com.  The import is a .bmp file - a bitmap.

In inkscape it is an image.

I make a square the same size as the bitmap and clip it.

    Then I group it.

I still have an image. To use scatter it must be a path.

So I make it a path by using trace bitmap.

When I try to make changes in the shape of that path by using the node tool, I see a large jumble of nodes.  There are none on the corners that I can use to change the shape.

    What am I doing incorrectly?

    Thank you for your time.

I don't fully understand... but if you used trace bitmap on the imported image, Inkscape vectorizes it, that's why you're seeing so many nodes.

Scatter is working here on a clipped, grouped bitmap.   N.B. Scatter requires the object be higher in the z-order than the path.

I have attached a video showing what I have been doing.  Scatter works but I am unable to use the node tool on the clip.  What am I missing?  What did you do, click by click?

@kartonman You must have the Show clipping path button enabled.

Thank you Marcos for the time.  I can't watch the video you sent because my computer says the file is corrupt and it won't play.  I have attached a video showing a clip with the button enabled.  I still just end up with an image which cannot be edited with the node tool.

Marcos, I am using version 1.2.1 .  What version are you using?  Have you been able to make an arch following the procedure that I submitted with my original post?

Hi Rekor, I see no message.

Rekor was a spammer...  They have been dealt with. 😈

As for editing the clipped image; I'd ensure the clipping object is a path, before clipping, to provide most control. If the image is grouped after clipping, a double click is needed to enter the group to node-edit the clipping path.

Thanks.  I will give that a try..   Your help and patience is greatly appreciated.

That was the solution.  Now the next question.  I am trying to make an ho scale window arch.  The pattern of bricks should go on top of the path on which I am applying them.  But they center on the arch. How do I get them on top of the path?

I think there is an offset adjustment in the scatter dialog.

In the scatter dialog, adjust the value of [Normal offset: 0.0]

Thank you all!  Now I will play a bit with various looks and then add arches to 5 card models. If legal, maybe I will post an image of a finished one.  Thanks again. Stay healthy and have a good life.
