    Hi There,

I admit I'm trying to dodge hours of YouTube viewing by asking a simple question, but I can't seem to find a Tool Button which does this simple thing, so I thought I'd just ask.

I only need Inkscape as an upgrade of Microsoft paint really, and my needs are simple, but other software I've looked at (Sumo/Gimp) don't seem to be able to do it (although I haven't exhausted Gimp yet).

I just need to create a parabola as a line, not as a shape. I then want to be able to alter that parabola for size and width, as a parabola. In Paint I draw an ellipse and erase the top half, but then can't manipulate it as I wish, but at least I have a parabola as a line drawing..

I've had a quick look at Inkscape and can't see how it can be done except as a shape with infill and eraser issues, which require a line across the top to complete the shape. I obviously don't want to do it freehand as that would look terrible.

If anyone can point out a how this can be done, I would be grateful. If Inkscape can't do it, then I'm in CAD territory and that looks very complex - and I only want a parabola; it's an upside down horseshoe for goodness sake!!

    Thanks,

    David35580

You might take a look at Inkscape's Function Plotter extension:

    That's brilliant, thanks Tyler.

I'll have a look at that and see if I can get my head round it (anything but go to one of the CAD progs).

Now that I know it is possible, I'll invest some time in learning Inkscape and then donate something.

    Many thanks,

    David

    👍

Just an update on my parabola issue.

I seem to have been able to create one by cutting the top off of an ellipse and then having the background and infill the same colour. The line across the top then disappeared, and only came back if I altered the actual shape, although I can select and resize the parabola I've created without that happening. Actually I did that cutting of the ellipse yesterday, and when I went back to insert a shape today, that is what I got from memory, so i just changed the infill colour to the page background colour and there it was - no bar across the top of the half-oval. Why, will no doubt remain a mystery, at least to me.

I would include an image, but CTRL-V doesn't seem wiling to insert an image into the comment, and the attachment clip seems similarly unhelpful.

However, I've managed my parabola, so I'm happy.

    Many thanks again.
