Beginners' Questions erase tool not working

erase tool not working. The layer is open, visible, the object is selected, the erase tool is selected,

it makes its little red track, and just disappears after I release the mouse button, having erased nothing.

I have used the erase tool successfully very often

The erase tool frequently dumps or crashes the whole inkscape file without saving, so I save frequently while erasing. I've developed a modus operandi of saving after every long complicated erase stroke, all good.

Then I have some new work and the file refuses to erase, in any of the layers. the subject is a set of vector graphics, one grouped object per layer. The grouping of objects is the new element.

Maybe I need to ungroup to enable the erase function ? It took hours to stitch the thing together, I'm so afraid of it shifting while I work.

Personally I find the Eraser tool quite buggy, as apparently you have too.  Most of the time, it does not work for me at all!  I never use it, and I never suggest other users use it.  I really don't know why it was ever added to Inkscape.  In many ways, that tool is raster functionality wedged into a vector editor.  As you can tell, I'm not a fan.

Maybe it's time to learn how to remove unwanted contents in the style of vector graphics?  If you can share your file, or some file that is similar to what you're working on, we can show you the proper way to remove unwanted contents.  There are many, many, many different ways!

In any case, what you're seeing is likely a bug.  I don't know what to tell you, to make it work.  Maybe someone else knows a trick?

    Edit

If your file is large, which it sounds like it might be, it could be you're just seeing a delay.  It could be if you wait a little longer, you'll see something happen?

    Thank you Brynn

I found that I was able to erase if I degrouped the objects. Erase will not work on a combined object formed by grouping. I am busy learning to use the Bezier tool to clip images. Is this a better way to remove unwanted parts of an image ?

It's one of the ways.  But you should know that clipping does not really remove anything.  Essentially, it only hides it.  But it's very effective in many situations.

Hello there! I have had this eraser issue for a while now and have found it very frustrating, but just recently I found a method that gets the tool working again hope this helps! ^^

captinmangletty - yeah, I'm not clicking a link on your google drive.  You should paste the text in this chat instead of potentially sharing a virus.

That was years ago, but I've removed the link anyway.
