Using Inkscape with Cutters/Plotters problem adjusting vinyl cut parts to be actual size

Hey folks I am using  VinylExpress R series 2  vinyl cutter and cutting with Inkscape.  I have made many items with this unit and it works great with inkscape. However I recently was asked to make a very large sign.  The sign was drawn in Autocad and I am able to break up the sign into parts and import those parts into Inkscape for adjustment and cutting. However I am finding that the parts are not coming out the correct size.  For instance there is an arrow like point on one side and I decided to do a test cut with that point and measure the vinyl cut part and compare it to the CAD drawing.  It is coming out larger by about an eighth of an inch. I have tried to adjust the doccument settings and scale it but it does not seem to change the part size.  What am I doing wrong?  What settings should I look at to get the cut parts to be the same exact size as the CAD drawings?   I noticed there is a dialog box on import that has various settings in it but I typically never change those.  Any ideas or suggestions?  Also I have often had to fight with the directional orientation of the parts in the plot extension dialog where I think the part will be oriented one way and the part wind out coming out in a different direction
