When trying to use the union command to bring together a rectangle and an image, the rectangle disappears. I have used the path: stroke to path to convert the rectangle into a path.
What do you want as a result? Perhaps the image clipped by the rectangle? If so draw rectangle over the image - select both and go Object->Clip->Set Clip.
