I am a new user and am trying to edit a bitmap that I have traced. Question is how do I copy just parts of my traced bitmap to allow me to move them on to differect layers. I have these cat pen and ink drawings and have them traced, but I want to edit their positions on the page or put them on individual layers!
Tried "Break Apart" but this makes them unusable with black vector blobs all over them!!!
Thanks for any ideas. Trying not to prepare each cat individually and doing a bitmap trace one by one, it will take hours!!!
@koantoon What happens if you: 1 first break the path apart 2 then you select only one of the cats by draggin around them and use combine paths (Ctrl+K)?
Kirstie´s suggestion should work in general, but is a bit error prone.
Another workaround is to duplicate the auto traced result for each single element you want to have in the end separated (I suggest just 1 double at the time, when you're not on a strong machine) - then take the Beziertool (B) and draw a rough outline around a portion you want to separate - didn't need to be a closed path - then select the path plus one doubled auto traced image and go Path->Intersection - which will cut away the surrounding elements - go ahead with duplicate - drawing outlines - Path->Intersection etc. Good luck.
@PixelPest Could you explain what you mean by a bit error prone?
Do you mean it is a bit difficult sometimes to drag around a picture? Because yes, that is a bit tricky. My described method is a quick method and has often worked fine for me. You have to be clever in which cat you select first, combine, and drag it aside before selecting the next cat.
@koantoon asked about breaking apart the path. That result looks very strange. But if you then select some strange looking bits and blobs and combine them again, it will be a good kitty.
Of course Inkscape doensn't know by itself which parts to break apart and combine. So that is what we have to tell Inkscape.

It's something I would like to know.
I have never been able to break apart, or copy selected nodes out of the traced object correctly.
Inkscape uses potrace, and potrace by default usually gives individual objects.
I've traced your screenshot with potrace.
There must be something I'm missing.

Thank for your ideas. @Kirstie and @PixelPest
Both methods are much better than what I was doing!
Much appreciated. :D
I did multiple duplicate layers and then was selecting everything other than the item I wanted and deleting them!
This is the result. THANKS :D
