I just upgraded to the "new-and-improved" version of Inkscape and immediately noticed what I view as a major change - you no longer "save as" PNG, now you have to Export as PNG. I'm not sure what the logic was but as long as I can save an SVG as a PNG I'm good. The problem is that I can't find any way to identify a folder to save to. The first time I tried to save a file I found it in a really old, obscure folder. I need to identify the destination folder the file is being saved in....what am I missing?
What kind of OS you´re using where you can´t specify the location to save a file?
The main problem which seems to be addressed with "export" instead of "save as" is that by ignorance you´ll loose all vector data+properties when not aware.
My issue seems to be one of semantics....the notation "Export as" would be better changed to "Export to". The word "as" implies that there may be PNG variables to be selected whereas "to" is much clearer as to intent.
My point exactly. On MAC (is that a real OS?) it clarifies the meaning of "as" which has nothing to do with a folder destination. In the new Windows version, the intent is "where do you want to save this file?" so it would be exceedingly more clear to use the word "to".
More to the point, there were previously two methods to generate a PNG: "Export" and "Save-as", the latter being deemed inferior.
The option for "Cairo PNG" has been removed from the "Save as" dialog, as it was often confused with the "Export PNG image" option, but only supported a small subset of PNG rendering features.

Well - On macOS it says:
