Beyond the Basics Lost gradients bug

    Hi,

I think I observed a bug for which I can hardly create a bug report because I wasn't able to reproduce it, but to me it seems too serious to be ignored.

I opened one of my drawings and a lot of elements were missing. A look at the object manager revealed that in fact they were still there but invisible and a look at the paint/stroke dialog showed the reason: the fill was set to 'no fill'. But the last time the document was edited they had a fill. In fact all 'invisible objects' had a gradient fill. But a look at the little drop down list of gradients in my document showed that there was not one single gradient left. I am absolutely sure that I did not delete any gradient or set the fill for all these objects to 'no fill'.

As mentioned before I was not able to reproduce this, but this behaviour is very frightening. What can I do to prevent a massive loss of work? Save each iteration with a new name, close it and open it again to be sure everything is there?

When this happened I was converting artwork from Corel 2021 to svg. I ...

    1. ... opened Corel files in Inkscape
    2. ... copied elements from these Corel files in Inkscape to a new document (the one that lost all gradients)
    3. ... copied elements from CorelDraw App directly to my new Inkscape document (the one that lost all gradients) (Copy&Paste)
    4. ... copied gradients from imported Corel draw document to elements of my new document (Ctrl+Shift+V)

I have no clue a which point what happened but I will keep trying to reproduce this.

    Best,

    David

    May be this:

    https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2/
    • There is a bug in Inkscape 1.2 that could destroy gradients, clips and clones in one's drawing, but one would only notice it happened after saving the file and then later opening it again. To work around the bug do NOT use copy-paste while having the Export dialog open! The bug will be fixed in Inkscape 1.2.1.

What can I do to prevent a massive loss of work?

I have everything that takes over 1 hour of work in a local git repository, but any version control system would be fine I guess?

SVG files are especially nice as its all plain text.

Argh... I've just had this today on v1.2.2...
Thankfully I only lost about 1 hour's work which I'll hopefully be able to recover between the last 'safe' autosave and the master document which has lost all gradients.

Didn't know 1.3 was already out, so I've just updated in the hope the issue will never return.
