Beginners' Questions V1 Preferences file?
  1. #1

Need a little help, recently installed v 1 on my win 7 op sys.  Usually I can copy over the default file, but this time it's not working.  the edit>preferences>system info says that it's located at:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\inkscape        I tried saving the default filethere and it doesn't work.   To note:  on Win 7, I'm not the 'owner' of the pc (though the prime user - In another thread this was discussed, inkscape does not allow for changes).  So, I usually have to save MY default file in the owners appdata\roaming\inksacpe folder.  Need some suggestions please.

On another note, there's something next to the Edit>Preferences>system (user preferences) info that says Reset Preferences (again, not editable for me)v- I clicked on that and nothing happened.  What's supposed to happen?

    thanks.

I'm guessing Reset Preferences is a way to get a default preferences file, without having to delete the old one.

Personally, I don't understand how that's supposed to work on a shared computer.  I just don't have any experience with it.  But for the record, what happens when you try to save default.svg there?

*{note: edited to add more clarifying info,

Well, it does not recognize the default file, which is confusing me. Just to clarify, 92.4 uses the default file and v 1.0 does not. I think I've also added the defalt file somewhere else (in pgm files maybe) for 92.4.  It seems I can only  save the file if I use a pgm that shows hidden files  (like commander), then I can drop and drag to save it.

Is there a way to use a different default file for 92.4 and 1.0?  Or do both versions use one default?   I'm confused (as usual!).  Need to go see if I can find another default file somewhere.

What's the order inkscape looks for the default file? C:\..user..app data .  then somewhere in c:\pgm files...?

As mentioned elsewhere, Inkscape stores its preferences in the folder "%appdata%/inkscape" (copy and paste that into Windows Explorer and hit enter), which should be the same location as displayed in the preferences dialog. This location is writable by the currently logged in user, unless you've misconfigured something on your system or are not actually running Inkscape as the current user.

Other than that you should probably describe better what you're actually trying to do:

    • What's the "default file"? preferences.xml? A default template?
    • When talking about files, give the full name including extension of the file in question.
    • When talking about paths, copy&paste the actual location. You're not helping anybody by using ellipses in paths and/or using random abbreviations.
    • How do you know Inkscape does not "recognize" whatever file you're trying to copy somewhere? What would you expect? What happens instead?

Patrick, I'm not the owner of the pc, that's an issue - and the edit>preferences line is not editable (it's not grayed out and I can click in it, but it does not allow for any changes).  Maren has reviewed in another thread and suggested that I report it (haven't done that yet, haven't had the time to figure out how).

Sorry about the ellipses, was on my phone, thought folks would realize it was the same place as desribed in my first post.  (please refer to my first post that does explain things).

I don't usually use two versions of inkscape.  So, do I use one default file for both?

Currently have the default file located in the pc owner's folder -  C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\inkscape     It works for v 92.4 but not v 1.0.  (none of my changes such as the number of layers, zoom, etc show), clearly not using my default file.

ok maybe this is the problem that I'm stuck on.  V 1 shows this C:\Users\craig\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\preferences.xml    but preferences.xml is a file and not a folder - I guess that's where my confusion is coming in.  How or where do I place the default file for v 1.0?

Preferences.xml is what people usually mean when they say "the prefs file" or "preferences file". Up until 1.0, if you wanted to restore all preferences to defaults, you had to delete that file, and then Inkscape will give you another one, the next time you open it.  I'm guessing the new Reset Preferences button must be a way to get default preferences without having to delete that file.   It reverts all your preferences to the defaults.  But I think this is not related to your current problem.

As far as I understand, you are trying to create a custom default.svg document or template.

On a computer with a single user, that default.svg file should go in C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\templates

If I understand what you're saying, previously (v 0.92.4), you had to put your default.svg file in the computer owner's directory ( C:\Users\owner-name\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\template ) because putting it in your directory ( C:\Users\your-name\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\templates) did not work.

But now, with 1.0 beta, you're trying to put it in your directory (which as far as I understand, this is how Inkscape is supposed to work).  (I don't know why it previously did not work.  Personally, I always suspected that you might have done something funky either with your computer, or with installing inkscape on it, somewhere along the way, which is why it did not work before.  But I don't think we ever really nailed it down, in 0.92.4.)

So now, I think you're asking for troubleshooting, to get Inkscape to work properly, with a custom default.svg doc installed in your own user directory.  Right?

And for my original question, when you say it doesn't work, what exactly does that mean?

Does it mean that when you open Inkscape, you don't get your custom default, but you only get the original default.svg document?  Or do you mean that the computer won't let you save it in your directory?  Or maybe something else is going wrong?

    Edit

Just re-reading your comments.  I wonder if you had tried to save the default.svg in

    C:\Users\your-name\AppData\Roaming\inkscape

    instead of

    C:\Users\your-name\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\templates

Maybe it's as simple as that??

Brynn, yes.  I'm trying to install a default file, and it's not working in V 1. oh you might be right, let me go explore that, might be wrong folder.

Brynn, that was it!  Not sure why, but couldn't find that folder before, and I had to run as an admin, plus use a file explorer that let me into it.  thanks much!  it's still in the owner's folder though.  I think I clicked on the reset button, so that could have been an issue too, not sure.

Still can't figure out how or why 92.4 and v1 use different default files, that threw me off.
