Beginners' Questions Fonts keep switching to a different font when editing text

    Hi,

I work on an imported pdf-file, saved as svg. I have the font in use and it is imported as font.

When I change something in the text, the font changes to something else. Another font and another size. I can correct it, but it does that everytime I edit the text. I edit the text in the right pane, not in the textblock. Also the color changes sometimes to black instead of the original color.

It's quite annoying, can I prevent this?

Please (if you can) share a copy of the pdf file, and:

    1. Describe your OS (your computer's Operating System: Mac/Windows/Linux/etc. & version).
    2. Describe if Inkscape was newly installed, or upgraded from an earlier version.
    3. Describe the version of Inkscape and the installer you used (the file you downloaded from the web: .msi/.exe/.zip/appimage/other, PPA/Snap/Flatpak, dmg/other )
    4. Describe any special hardware being used, like tablet/stylus, external drives or multiple monitors.
    5. Describe any helper/assistive programs or keyboard modifiers (macros, languages, etc.).

    Bonus points, if you:

    • Attach* a screenshot of the issue.
    • Attach* an example SVG file that has the issue.

Posting links to outside hosts is also permitted, hotlinking (embedding) is not.

Inkscape: Inkscape 1.4 (e7c3feb100, 2024-10-09), Flathub version, because that's how you run programs on Fedora Silverblue/Bluefin. Installed a few month ago, problem was always there. Dutch version.

No special hardware, keyboard and mousepad from laptop. No other programs, macros.

    Begin:

I delete the point (just to cause the error) in the right pane. Then the font changes:

While I didn't touch the text-properties in any way.

What happens when you edit text directly in the textblock?

Your issue with font changes when editing text in an SVG file can be somewhat likened to challenges faced by video editors, such as those using CapCut, when working with imported text overlays or custom assets. In video editing, users often experience font mismatches or formatting resets when importing external files or templates into a project. For instance, in CapCut, if you import custom text animations or assets that rely on specific fonts not installed on the system, it could lead to default substitutions. This behavior is analogous to your SVG issue and can similarly be frustrating. A potential workaround in both cases involves ensuring all assets (fonts, styles, or animations) are embedded or pre-configured before importing into the editor. If you are trying to import custom fonts on capcut but don't know how to do it easily then click here and follow the guide. In your case with SVGs, you might try converting text elements to outlines (paths) before saving the file, which ensures the appearance remains consistent but sacrifices text editability. Video editors using CapCut might use similar strategies by converting dynamic text layers into static overlays to lock in the desired appearance.

Then it doesn't happen, but I think you're supposed to edit it in the text pane? As "the advised way"?
