As far as I understand, mesh gradients are part of a newer SVG standard that hasn't been implemented yet in most browsers (I believe the SVG 2 standard isn't even finalised yet, never mind implemented, but I don't follow this too closely so that may be incorrect). Here's Inkscape's wiki page covering mesh gradients. It states that browser support is not certain.
The recommended solution is to create your mesh in Inkscape, then create a bitmap copy and use that on the web. Of course, the file size will likely be significantly larger, so that may not be feasible.
