Beyond the Basics Combine two paths into one continuous path

I have two paths, one is a circle segment and the other is a straight line. The end nodes are already snapped together. The straight line is even a tangent to the circle segment.

How do I connect the paths to form a continuous path without one or both paths being changed?

I have already tried every conceivable option in the "Path" menu, but with every variant, one or both paths are changed massively. Even selecting the end points to be connected with the Node tool and connecting the end points results in the circle segment being massively changed.

Surely it can't be true that an elementary function like merging paths in Inkscape doesn't work?

Because the circle segment is still in parametric mode you´ll need to combine line+segment - go Path->Combine - then take Node-tool select the 2 nodes where the 2 objects meet and hit Join end nodes - done:

Thanks. In the meantime, I have done the second step, without combining the paths beforehand. When combining, one of the paths always would go completely broken. Either the line jumped into the circle segment, or the circle segment became a triangle, or the circle segment would change to an egg-shape 🤦‍

Before joining the nodes, I snapped them exactly together once again. Nevertheless, every step only worked on about every third attempt only, and Inkscape even crashed in between.

I can't believe that such a simple elementary operation is THIS buggy.

Sounds weird imho. When you don´t need to combine the circle segment is no circle anymore but a path. I just followed your description. Here it´s working flawlessly since forever I can remember. In case you updated Inkscape recently consider to Reset its Preferences and restart Inkscape. Jumping and shape shifting never been here the case. You should check Status bar about your selection for any hints.

    Okay will do

Now that path suddenly has a gap with a node to it that identifies itself with "Change the Width" in the status bar. But nothing happens at all when the node is dragged.

How do I get rid of the gap, and what is that node for?

(I have completely reset the settings in the meantime)

OK, that apparently came up after I applied Pattern to Path.

Anyway, back to combining separate paths into one path. I'm going crazy. I combined a few more paths into one path and wanted to fill them.

Now the fill appears partly outside and partly inside the resulting shape

You still have segments; combining isn´t enough, you need to join the end nodes as shown in my reply#2
