I don't remember what I was trying to do, but NOW when I select Rectangle, Ellipse, Pen or Pencil Tool something strange happens.
When I try using those 4 tools, they don't work. Many short horizontal & vertical lines appear as I move the tools around. And a few extremely small words show up at the end of each one.
[click] one of the tiles in the colour palette to slectt a fill colour and try again. [right-click] a tile to set a stroke colour.
Below the colour palette lies the status bar, showing lots of useful information. In the lower left corner you'll see [Fill: (some colour)] and [Stroke: (some colour)] and [O: (some value)]. "O" means opacity. Zero opacity is the same as full transparency which is of course glass-like and invisible. Set this to the max value of 100 for fully opaque shapes.

Before proceeding have a look here please: https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/getting-back-to-square-one-and-starting-over-its-easy/
Now I remember what I was trying to do. I wanted to find a way to make the Pen Tool's thin red line and 1st square when drawing easier to see.
