Under Edit >Preferences>Tools>Text, You can add additional Font Directories for Inkscape to load when started. In Version 1.0, this works fine. With the latest update (1.0.1), it is not working/loading the fonts. I've tried removing the file directory and inserting again and still no go. (I have a file folder called "Additional Fonts" in My Documents that I am referencing.)
This is happening to me as well. I’m on latest Windows 10 x64 (20H1) and using the latest version of Inkscape (v1.0.1). :(
I also want to confirm things about this feature:
Can the font files be placed into subfolders instead of the root folder?
Does font file naming matters? Would they conflict each other if there are two files with same name but inside different subfolders?
Is the following path string a correct format for Windows version of Inkscape? C:\Users\medrivia\Downloads\fonts(using backslash instead of normal slash, trailing backslash omitted)
Hope there’s a fix regarding this issue ASAP, because the inability to use custom fonts in Inkscape is a dealbreaker to me.
@Aero That works, thankfully... although it’s not the path where I place my fonts regularly. Does that mean additional (custom) font directories isn’t supported yet in Windows?
Update: Ah, sorry. No need to reply. I’m already aware it’s a bug; just wondering whether it will be fixed or not.

I'd file a bug report here: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/issues.

Create and move your fonts to the following folder.
C:\Users\medrivia\.fonts
